The Florida Keys are sequence of islands that begin at the bottom of Florida's mainland. The islands are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Key Largo is the first island , followed by Islamorada , Marathon ,Big Pine Key , The lower Keys and approximately 100 miles south of Key Largo at the other end of the islands is Key west. The best dive spots of Florida are located here. The Florida Reef, the only living coral garden in North America, lies on Atlantic side of the Keys. Key Largo is home to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. In this park over 200 miles of underwater heaven. You can dive wrecks both manmade, like the spiegal or as old as 16th Century wrecks to hunt treasures and artifacts . After diving the Florida Keys it is easy to understand why the Keys are the “Dive Capital of the World”.

 

You'll quickly note that most locations are defined by "MM" designation. "MM" stands for "Mile Marker". Mile markers are the small green signs on the side of the road that represent the mile number along the overseas highway US 1 which runs through all the islands. Mile markers go lower as you go further south to Key West. Key Largo is located at mile marker 110 , and Key West begins at mile marker 8. Here is a legend with the ranges of MM's for the islands.
